The assessment of environment and security interplay in Eastern Europe (Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine) provided a unique view of the region from a then yet unexplored perspective. Noting Eastern Europe’s strategic position between the EU and Russia, the report pointed to several critical areas where environmental and security concerns might converge in the future: these included Crimea and Donbas, but also North-Western Belarus (the site of Belarus’s new Astravets nuclear power plant) and vast Polesie wetlands on Belarus-Ukraine border, the Carpathian mountains, and the Dniester and the Danube rivers. Analytical findings are richly illustrated with original maps and are presented alongside postal stamps from Eastern European countries as miniature reflections of their peoples’ lives and aspirations – environmental and others.
